MODERN KID - ISSUE #1

I feel lucky to be a part of the growing families of many of my clients who have children or while in the process of working together share the great news of a baby on the way. 4 years ago, it was very challenging to find the right resources as to finding modern solutions for our modern kids.

I appreciate all of those who say it's hard to live an uncluttered life with kids and struggle with finding solutions for organized play. Designers today now offer design at all levels to help us keep sane with the chaos of toys, art supplies, play and messy eating. Here are a few of my favorites for excellent design, function, quality and value.

MODERN - PLAY
Life of the MODERN KID ... what better way to celebrate strength than to pick up a boulder and jump ... sculptural art pieces that bring a bit of the outdoors and nature into our interiors, who says you have to have the chaos of bold primary colors to play with. Enjoy over scaled proportions of natural objects in the home. Inspired by the calm of a Japanese rock garden but worried about how to make your home “child friendly” consider a playful alternative of integrating a rock garden within the home that is sophisticated in the use of materials and color palette.

MODERN - EAT
High chairs can be the worst crumb collector with the intricate details of piping and stitching, not really taking into consideration the maintenance of cleaning or durability of standing up to a baby bouncing in his high chair time over time. Vinyl seats that eventually discolor or crack to complicated hardware that is not only childproof but as well adult proof.

MODERN - WEBSITES
The Internet offers many online MODERN baby resources. In the past few years, online shopping not only offers over night shipping, no line-ups, white glove deliveries plus gift-wrapping. For all of you who hesitate to shop on line, with a little bit of reading and research on what lifestyle choices are important to you, I offer to share with you through my personal experience with clients, some great resources that come highly recommended.

That baby box crib is rather scary looking, I wouldn't dare purchase that for my newborns. A couple of modern pieces here and there in a nursery are great, but to fully furnish it with modern pieces make it feel cold, it should have a playful, lighthearted feel...not sterile. As a fellow designer, if that is what a client likes then I make it work for them.

The box crib is a rendering and may appear more hard lined than actual fabrication. Keep in mind that it is also shown without any of the bed linens. As a designer, it is the skill of combining a style and look that reflects the client's aesthetic while also being functional. Baby furniture when designed has to meet regulations of child safety even before it can be out on the market, furniture for children is tested for function and safety. If you were to combine these modern items with rich textured fabrics or diffused lighting and beautiful artwork ... modern doesn't have to be cold as what many interpret MODERN to mean.

I agree with Gaile, any crib looks rather stark without its wardrobe of warm and comfortable bedding and accessories. I have found a great source of contemporary baby linens online at http://www.elegantlinenspc.com/Baby-Linen-Nursery-Menu.htm. The quality and variety of nursery and layette items are inspiring.
